Choir students have fun rehearsing at lunch

Carlmont choir students are warming up their voices for the upcoming Pops Benefit Concert, British Invasion.

The concert features all eight choirs, with proceeds contributing to the award winning Carlmont choral music program. Money raised from selling tickets helps students pay for things like their annual choir tour.

This year the theme of the concert focuses on celebrating the best of British pop and rock music, including artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Adele, Sting, and Queen.

“We’re also sneaking a couple of U2 songs in,” admited choral director, Genevieve Tep. “They’re Irish, not British, but the music is too good to pass up!”

Abbey Holman, a junior and choir student, said, “My favorite song that we are performing is ‘Rumor’ by Adele. I’m always singing it in my head.”

Though she happily hums the tunes to performance songs, talented singers such as Holman don’t take practices for the concert very lightly.

“We practice every day in class, and then we have a couple of lunch rehearsals,” commented Melissa Wood. “We also have one important dress rehearsal where we run through the entire show a couple of times.”

As the show dates creep nearer and nearer, stress levels steadily rise, but so do levels of anticipation and enthusiasm.

“We really try to perfect all the songs because it’s our annual fundraiser,” Wood stated, “but it’s really exciting knowing that we have a concert coming up!”

The Carlmont choir will present the 2011 Pops benefit concert British Invasion on Thursday, October 20th and Friday October 21st  at 7pm in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at www.carlmontperformingarts.com, or at the box office an hour before the show.
