A Toms flag.

One for one.

This is the motto of Toms, the popular shoe and eye-wear brand.

Toms was started by Blake Mycoskie. Mycoskie was a contestant on the Amazing Race and visited Argentina during the game. Although he did not win the race, he ended up back in Argentina in 2006 and observed many children with out shoes. This was the birth of Toms and the one for one policy. For every pair of shoes bought, Toms gives a child in need a pair of shoes, according to their website Toms has since given over two million to children in need.

Not only are Toms a way to help improve people’s qualities of life but a stylish, comfortable option.

Sophomore Brian Palma said, “Toms are really comfortable and they are so easy to put on. I also  really like the simple design of the shoe.”

On top of being comfortable, Toms also can be incorporated in to many different looks and outfits.

Sophomore Tara Callan said, “They are pretty versatile, you can dress them up or down. I have some sparkly ones and ones with snowflakes and I love that I can wear them with almost everything.”

Although there are many people love their Toms they do have their downsides. Toms have been known to stretch out with wear and this can create a real problem.

Callan said, “I bought a pair that fit perfectly but after a while they stretched out and became too loose.”

Palma gave some advice, “I always buy them a little tight so that when they stretch they will still fit well.”

Toms have expanded its shoes from the classic shoe to many other styles including  cordones, and short boots for everyone. For women, there are also wedge heels and sandals. Toms started out with some basic colors and now has a variety of colorful designs.

On top of their shoe line, Toms has an eye-wear line with the same concept of one for one.

According to the Toms website, when shoes are distributed, sometimes they are paired with education on hygiene. Toms also states that they try to provide sustainable eye care and then give the appropriate eye wear or medical treatment.

It many not seem like shoes or sight are a necessary part of functioning, but they are. The Toms website states that shoes prevent diseases or infections and can complete a school uniform allowing children access to an education.  The site also states that 285 million people are either visually impaired or blind, 80 percent of those are curable.

These small things give people confidence and opens doors for them.
