Festivus: A festival for the rest of us!

Tired of all the commercialism and pressure of the holiday season? Try celebrating Festivus!

Festivus is a secular holiday that one can celebrate instead of Christmas, Hanukkah,  and Kwanzaa. It was originally created by writer Dan O’Keefe, and popularized on the show Seinfeld.

How does one celebrate Festivus? There are three main parts: gathering around the Festivus Pole, the Airing of Grievances, and the Feat of Strength.

As opposed to a Christmas tree or a menorah, participants of Festivus gather around a Festivus pole. As is said by Frank Costanza during the episode of Seinfeld, “It’s made of aluminum. Very high strength-to-weight ratio. It requires no decoration. I find tinsel distracting.”

After dinner, everyone participates in the Airing of Grievances, where you tell everyone else how they’ve disappointed you in the past year.

The night ends with the Feat of Strength. Everyone engages in a no-holds-barred wrestling match, and the head of the household must be pinned to the ground before the guests can go home.

Participants also celebrate Festivus Miracles, where the simplest event is regarded as a miracle. An example:

“Gwen! How did you know I was here?”

“Jerry told me!”

“It’s a Festivus Miracle!”

So, if the glitz and glamor of the holidays isn’t your thing, why not try Festivus? After all, who doesn’t like wrestling and aluminum poles?
