Gender and Sexuality Alliance Club, or GSA, is an active club at Carlmont that allows students to feel welcomed and accepted for who they are.
GSA focuses on informing members about recent news and other topics that apply to the LGBTQ+ community. Not only that, but the club also provides a safe space for members to hang out during lunch without feeling discriminated against or judged.
In the past, GSA has focused on helping students gain acceptance. This year, however, the focus has shifted to educating members about current events. It has even added an extension to the sexual education program that the mainstream course does not cover.
“We’re trying to push away from tolerance and more to acceptance. We still do have days where we will do more education about the history, for allies and people who don’t know everything,” said Noah Hood, a sophomore and the president of GSA.
To many of the members, GSA is a safe space where they can socialize and connect with other students with whom they share common interests.
“It’s just nice to know that there are other people who are kind of the same. It’s nice to be around similar people. Even if I don’t talk to everyone, it’s nice to be around them because, at a school so big, it’s really hard to find people to be around because everyone is in their own space,” said Jaleyna Lara, a senior and a member of GSA.
GSA is also an open space for Allies or people who support the LGBTQ+ community. Even if you don’t identify as such, you are always welcome to come to the meetings to show your support for those who do.
“To me, [GSA] means building a community, and I think that’s really important for LGBTQ+ individuals because often we are shunned from other communities. [sic] It feels nice to be on the council of a community that’s a lot more accepting than other areas,” said Brie Wynne, a senior and the vice president of GSA.
GSA meets every Monday at lunch in D11.
