Sushi on Laurel Street

Kaigan Sushi provides yummy food and service with a smile.

On Laurel Street in San Carlos, California. there are many food options. Among the food selections are a few Japanese restaurants such as Shiki Bistro, Kaigan Sushi, and Ozuma Japanese Restaurant. I tried Kaigan Sushi and was quite pleased with my meal.

In the past I have gone to Shiki Bistro, which I always enjoy, but this time trying Kaigan Sushi the biggest difference I noticed was that the service at Kaigan Sushi was significantly faster on a Friday night, and the waiters and waitresses were more friendly than at Shiki Bistro.

Kaigan Sushi offers a traditional style of Japanese seating in which one sits on the floor (left).

Kaigan Sushi has a variety of seating options such as bar, booth, table, and a traditional style of Japanese seating where one sits on the floor (usually on cushions with a slightly raised up table).

I ordered a Tempura Hand Roll and a Chicken Teriyaki Roll. The Tempura Hand Roll was a single roll with all its ingredients wrapped inside seaweed. Personally, I liked the Chicken Teriyaki Roll better than the Tempura.

The Tempura Hand Roll was smaller than expected but it still tasted great.

The Teriyaki Roll was described on the menu as “grilled chicken and teriyaki sauce wrapped in toasted seaweed with seasoned rice and cut into eight pieces,” which is exactly how it came. These warm sushi rolls were something I had never tried before, but they are definitely something I am going to be having again.

My friend ordered a Chicken Teriyaki entree that consisted of miso soup and a green salad as a starter, followed by a bowl of broiled chicken filet with teriyaki sauce served on top of steamed rice. She described the miso soup as salty and nicely seasoned and said that the tofu was tasteful, even though she is not normally a fan of it.

Before the main part of the meal, the chicken teriyaki bowl, customers are served a bowl of steaming miso soup.

The second the bowl of rice and chicken came to our table I could smell the teriyaki and the seasoning and I immediately thought to myself that next time I come to Kaigan Sushi I wanted to try this Chicken Teriyaki entree. The smell of this dish was intense and very tempting.

One of the most appealing aspects of Kaigan Sushi was their presentation of their food. Everything was tastefully laid out on the decorative plates, and the entrees that were topped with sauce had the perfect amount.

The grilled chicken on top of steamed rice and topped with teriyaki sauce has a smell so strong and tempting that it makes mouths water.

Kaigan Sushi is a small and laid back restaurant that is perfect for a date, a family dinner, or a fairly quick sit-down meal. The restaurant’s beautiful presentations and variety of options make it a place that I would want to go back to.
