A group of the 2016 varsity and JV track runners pose for a photo after practice, full of energy and ready for the season to begin.

This year, the 2016 track team is focusing on moving up to the next league and becoming a stronger and faster team.

“I have been here four years, and I have always had amazing, strong, hardworking teammates, but this year I feel like we are a lot faster and stronger. We are in the second league, which is good, but I believe we can make it to the first. That’s our goal, right there,” said senior John Gray.

Right now the team is focusing on their first invitational meet on Saturday, March 5 in San Jose. The sprinters are working on their form, learning to run faster and how to quickly start off on the blocks. The long distance and mid distance runners are focusing on pacing themselves and building up stamina. The athletes doing field events are working on improving their high jumps, long jumps, and throws.

“Although this meet is optional, I’m proud that a lot of my teammates are taking part in it. A lot of schools are going to be there and it’s our first meet, so we are working hard to come in first as a team,” said sophomore Devon Sagon. “Also, our team as a whole looks really good so far. We all have been working really hard for this meet and also for the upcoming meets in the season. I’m positive that we can win this meet.”

The team have a lot of set goals this year for this upcoming season. They all have strong beliefs in moving up leagues and becoming a faster and stronger team as a whole.

“We have only been practicing for three weeks now, and so far we are looking a lot better since the first week. We are all in it to win it, and we’re working really hard physically and mentally,” said junior Mareo Tolson.
