A tour inside the new U-hall at Carlmont

Junior Sophie Haddad stands on the balcony of the new U-wing, looking at the hills in the distance. The recently constructed building has two floors, with regular classrooms on the lower level and science laboratories upstairs.Students have a bird’s-eye view of Carlmont from the upper level of the new building. In addition to a view of the hills, the balcony also overlooks the roof of the language classrooms.Several uprooted road signs lie in the parking lot. Although construction on the new building ended earlier last month, traces of the construction site can still be seen around campus.Staircases with railings lead to the upper level of the U-wing. Students can also access the second level using an elevator located at the center of the building.Carlmont staff recently relocated to the new classrooms. Spanish teacher Madeleine Fox left a note for students on the classroom door as a reminder of her new teaching location.Spanish teacher Rosa Argaluza moved to her new Spanish classroom in early December, bringing along artwork from her old classroom.“It took me three weeks to decorate my new classroom,” said Argaluza. “I like to be surrounded by colors!”The new desks in classrooms are designed to fit easily into formations of two or four, so students can work in groups. The triangular shape of the desk is unique to the new building.Touch-ups continue to be made after construction. A technician installs new security cameras that surround the building from all sides.As a part of landscaping, fern bushes were planted around the outside of the building with other evergreen vegetation.A small garden is located just outside of U-hall, where different species of plants grow in wooden planting boxes.After years of construction, Carlmont’s latest addition is ready to be home to students and staff. The new U-hall has officially been opened.
