Three minutes is all that it takes.
Senior Nisha Aeri has used music and composing to cope with stress all her life. Aeri writes lyrics to express her inner feelings about all aspects in life. Her three minute songs help her get through the rough days of a high schooler.
“I started writing lyrics in the beginning of my sophomore year, to relax my inner feelings with all the high school stress,” said Aeri.
The influence of writing lyrics began in her eighth grade year when she was with her counselor waiting to get her class assignments.
“It never occurred to me that I should take choir, but I took it and ever since then I’ve been in choir. In addition to choir, I also wanted to learn how to play an instrument, but I didn’t know how. My freshman year, I taught myself how to play the piano. Eventually I started making my own songs, by the end of junior year, I started producing music and making my own tracks for them,” said Aeri.
Other students also write their own songs to express their feelings. Music helps them relieve stress and improve their mood.
Junior Sierra Segal said, “Just like Nisha, some of my favorite and best songs are about heartbreak, but not all my songs are about heartbreak, just the best ones I think. There is one called “Her” which is about one of my stories on heartbreak.”
Many people have spotted Aeri listening to music everyday, even during the passing periods with hot pink headphones in, listening and getting inspired by many artists such as Mariah Carey, Sam Smith, and so on.
“My favorite composed piece, “Stay this Way” was influenced by Mariah Carey because it is a heartbreak song and it is about when you’ve broken up with somebody that you loved and everything, but you know that it is best to stay apart because you are not good for each other. This is an emotional and sensitive topic for me, but it can be relatable to many other people I share it with,” said Aeri.
Like Aeri, other students at Carlmont use music as a three minute escape from their life.
Junior Marion Demailly said, “I am not that anti-social, but I love music and when I put my headphones in, I feel like I can escape from this world and be in my own world for a bit.”
“Without music, I don’t know how I could release all this stress that is piled up in my head,” said Aeri.
Lyrics of “Stay this Way”
By Nisha Aeri
I didn’t thnk twice
I just let you go
Wanted you out of my life
Couldn’t have you anyone
Oh now all that’s left
Is our broken dream
Of us being together
Together for eternity
Even though I miss you,
I know I can’t have you
I would do anything to not have these feelings
It’s better if we
Stay this way
Cause we’re not made for each other,
Just not made for each other
I let you go so I
Shouldn’t feel this way
And now I wonder why I
Gave all my love away
But together we
We just won’t make it
It’s hard for you and for me
But we have to accpet it
Even though I miss you,
I know I can’t have you
I would do anything to not have these feelings
It’s better if we
Stay this way
Cause we’re not made for each other,
Just not made for each other
My heart beats no more
But it’ll be okay
I have all these memories
To help me get through the days
So go on with you life
Don’t think about me
It’s only for the best, right?
So keep going without me
