Everyone loves sleep. Everyone loves breakfast.
However, for busy high school students, it is hard to have both.
For many students, finding the balance between getting enough sleep and eating breakfast can be challenging.
Even though students know that they should be eating breakfast, many choose extra sleep instead.
“Even though I know it is better for me to eat, I would rather sleep because those extra ten minutes of sleep feel satisfying,” said 11th-grader James Houston. “Also, it takes a lot of unwanted effort to make a morning meal.”
For some, having no food in their system is not an issue, and they are able to sacrifice their breakfast for other important things.
“I am never really hungry in the morning. Also, I prioritize getting ready over eating breakfast,” said 12th-grader Megan Olazar.
Although there is a good amount of people that do not eat breakfast, there are still people that do eat in the morning. Some believe that their ability to get sleep and eat breakfast is based on one skill: having a set routine.
“I wake up, shower, get ready, then I make a waffle sandwich with jam, butter, and usually bananas that I will eat as I prepare for the school day ahead. If I have more time, I will make myself a bowl of cereal or I will have two waffles with maple syrup and butter. I stick to this routine because when I am hungry, it is harder for me to focus during school,” said 11th-grader Jimmy Rudger.
Many find that the addition of breakfast to their morning routine allows them to get more enjoyment throughout their day.
“I have no energy if I do not eat breakfast. Eating an apple or some sort of fruit every morning helps me build up energy and makes the start of my day positive,” said 12th-grader Lexi Posey.
For some, having a routine and eating in the morning is vital to their academic performance. For others, breakfast has no known effect on their workflow. Simply put, it all boils down to preference.
“For the people attempting to eat in the morning: wake up earlier, set up your alarm in a place where you have to get up and move, and avoid the snooze button. Remind yourself you are going to eat, make yourself food, and then carry on with your school day,” said Houston.
