The California State Senate recently passed Assembly Bill 257 and the Fast Food Accountability and Standards (FAST) Recovery Act. The bill creates a ten-member council of fast food franchises to “establish sector-wide minimum standards on wages, working hours, and other working conditions,” including a new $22 hourly wage cap for restaurant employees. Assembly Bill 257 fails to address larger issues, such as conditions for the rest of California’s minimum wage workers and American obesity, which has increased in tandem with portion sizes over the past few decades.
