Cartoon: Motherhood on strike
Shiyo Ohashi, Scot Scoop Cartoons Editor
By 2100, South Korea’s population is projected to have halved. In fifty years, the number of working-age people would be cut in half too, all while almost half the population will be older than 65. These population shifts result from the South Korean “birth strike.” South Korean women are refusing to have kids to focus on themselves and their jobs, plummeting their country’s birth rate to the lowest in the world. These women are protesting the tiring expectations placed on their gender, as well as domestic violence, discrimination, and anti-abortion laws. South Korea needs to either start listening to its women or risk its extinction. (Shiyo Ohashi)
