Cartoon: Murder Outside!
Keira Sarmiento, Staff Writer
People tend to overestimate the danger they face due to crime. According to a Gallup survey, in October 2023, 77% of Americans surveyed believed that crime was more than it was a year ago. However, as reported by the FBI, the crime rate from 2022 to 2023 decreased by 3%. Another research report covering the impacts in a more confined area saw similar trends in the disproportions between the perception of violent crime and the actual rates. The reason for Americans’ misinterpretation of crime is suspected to be the media they receive daily. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, crime is the second most common topic Americans consume in the media (with weather being first). Furthermore, those who consume the most crime news are also more likely to be very concerned about the safety of their community. People shouldn’t let the plethora of violent news they see greatly influence their sense of security. (Keira Sarmiento)
