While many goals still need to be met to ensure a healthy planet and sustainable living, humanity has made substantial progress over the past decades. Signs of positive impacts can be seen all around: wind turbines and solar panels along hills, electric cars on the road, and heat pumps in houses. Other wins are not as obvious. For example, banning the pesticide DDT in 1972 allowed Bald Eagles to exit the category of endangered species. The ozone layer, which had a large hole, is expected to fully heal by 2060. This shift from “the world is ending” rhetoric towards optimism is vital for further improvements– it will help us persevere, working together for a better planet. (Keira Sarmiento)
