Cartoon: The groundhog who never misses

In February, Punxsutawney Phil and fellow groundhogs around the U.S. predicted an early spring for 2024. Now in March, it seems Phil’s forecast is alarmingly accurate. Nebraska reached record February temperatures, and Colorado is already experiencing wildfires. People in Chicago are now able to walk around in shorts. Scientists argue that global warming is driving spring to arrive earlier and earlier each year, negatively impacting species by forcing them to rush through seasonal change and disrupting ecosystems. Although the warm weather feels pleasant now, if we allow the global warming trend to continue, spring may arrive too early, even for the groundhogs. (Keira Sarmiento)
