Cartoon: Tick-Tock, Congress
Tymofiy Kornyeyev, Staff Writer
With heightened privacy, security, and safety concerns about TikTok’s possible relation to the Chinese government, TikTok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew faced congress on March 23, 2023, in a hearing that can only be described as a pointless publicity stunt. Mirroring the congressional hearing regarding Facebook in 2018, the United States government has once again displayed its feeble grasp on the interworkings of technology, especially in its ignorance of genuine facts. Among other things, Chew proposed TikTok’s plan to make handling American user data more secure. Project Texas, as he calls it, would place the entire data process into the hands of a new, US-government-regulated subsidiary. As a result, this would shut off the parent company ByteDance’s access and address lawmakers’ concerns about the security of its users and their data . (Tymofiy Kornyeyev)
