Cartoon: White Paper Protests turn the page for new Chinese activism
Emma Yin, Staff Writer
Since a building fire in Ürümqi, Xinjiang, China, killed ten people, civil unrest has inflamed nationwide protests and demonstrations. The national protests, starting in Nov. 2022, came from China’s zero-COVID policy (believed to be responsible for the Ürümqi deaths) to displeasure against the Chinese Communist Party and its leader Xi Jinping. Some protestors have also been calling for democracy. These ongoing protests against COVID-19 lockdowns are referred to as the White Paper Protests or the A4 Revolution. This is the first time China has had major demonstrations since the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre, with many of China’s young people and students leading the rebellion. (Emma Yin)
