For decades, “Harry Potter” has dominated pop culture through movie premieres, online discussions, and even theme parks. The wizarding world continues to captivate new fans.
According to Scholastic, over 600 million copies of the books have been sold, connecting readers around the globe through a shared love of the characters and their stories.
“I really like how intricate the world is and the extent of the imagination and creativity of the author. I love all the characters,” said Grace Pomerenk, a sophomore at Oak Park and River Forest High School.
With such a large fan base, the “Harry Potter” franchise has expanded its possibilities, continuing to keep the magic alive for so long. Recently, a television series adaptation of the books is in the works. It is set to be released on Dec. 25, 2026, and fans are getting excited to watch it.
“I feel like the show is going to be just as good, if not better than the movies. Shows have more running time, so they’re able to cover more of the details in the book, or anything that might have gotten cut out originally,” Pomerenk said.
While some fans see the new television series as an attempt to tell a more complete story, others view it as an unnecessary remake.
“The idea of remaking something that’s already such a big hit is kind of pointless. Everybody knows the movies. There are other things you could do besides just retelling the story over and over for people who already know exactly how it goes,” said Hailey Kulich, a freshman at Carlmont High School.
Kulich’s ideas also address the concern among fans that the show’s production might not be about exploring themes the movies couldn’t, but instead about capitalizing on the millions of fans who love and would watch anything revolving around “Harry Potter.”
“A lot of motivation from television or really anything media-related nowadays is for money. Because ‘Harry Potter’ is so successful, they aren’t starting from scratch. There is already a super loyal fan base. This would make them want to make it again,” said Grace Popler, a sophomore at Sequoia High School.
Popler’s perspective adds another layer to the debate surrounding the new series, which has sparked significant controversy among fans.
One debate is the role of author J.K. Rowling, who has played a major part in the series. Her involvement has divided the community, as many disagree with her opinions on transgender issues and gender identity.
“I’ve heard some pretty negative things about her online, and that does make me hesitant to watch the show. I never like supporting programs or people who represent things that I strongly disagree with,” Popler said.
Another reason fans might be hesitant to watch is that the original cast will be replaced by new, unfamiliar characters, making it harder to connect with the show.
“Replacing the original characters is taking away some of the magic. It is a very nostalgic movie, and many people grew up with it. With a new cast, that might replace the nostalgic feeling, and it won’t be as special,” Kulich said.
The new cast is controversial because many people, like Kulich, believe that replacing these iconic characters will be incomparable with the original. Others believe that it is a good opportunity for a new generation to experience the “Harry Potter” world, just as people did when the movies were first released.
“It’s going to be a new creation. The old kids had their time in the spotlight. Now these kids are getting a chance to shine, which is pretty great,” Pomerenk said.
