The Harlem Shake is the new Gangnam Style, according to many Carlmont students, as this new upbeat dance is sweeping through not only the school, but the country.

When the Gangnam Style YouTube video was released in July of 2012 it reached one billion views this past winter. People were amazed and shocked that one seventh of the world had seen it.

The Harlem Shake is different. It is a short song that starts slow, then suddenly becomes really fast. The dance usually starts with one person dancing by themself to the the slow part, then when the fast part happens, more people come in and they all just dance crazily.

Junior Evan McClain wanted to somehow bring the Harlem Shake to Carlmont. He created a Facebook event called Harlem Shake and invited a bunch of Carlmont students, as he also wrote on the event, “You can invite anyone you want and please we will be keeping it (the dancing) clean.”

“I made it (the event) because I saw some really cool videos but I never really saw that one that was really big,” said McClain.

Sophomore James Pak is running for junior class president and included the Harlem Shake in his campaign video, along with someone pouring orange juice on him for a random/dramatic effect.

“On the day before the video was due, my friend said ‘Bro, you need to do the Harlem Shake,'”said Pak. “So I told as many people to come and when someone brought the oj it was done.”
The major question is how long will it last? Gangnam Style definitely lasted longer then many thought, but we will just have to wait and see what happens to the Harlem Shake.
