Signing for Starting Six

What started as a mere daydream, turned into a brilliant reality when seniors Kelsey Morgan and Syna Zali made Carlmont history as they booked Starting Six for this year’s homecoming dance.

Starting Six is band consisting of longtime East Bay Californians Bread, Nic Nac, Riggz, Fess, Goose, and Big Steve. The band started up after the six young men played basketball together in high school and found a common interest in music.

After they wrote their first song “Thirsty” in 2009, they decided to make a music video just for fun. They didn’t expect any sort of reaction when they posted the clip on YouTube.

In an interview with SXSW, Bread said, “I thought only our families were going to see it, that the most we’d get is like 100 views and that would be all from relatives and friends. But when the week was done and we already had 10,000 views, it was like, ‘Whoa. What is going on? Who’s watching this video?’ We had no idea that people were noticing us like that.”

The video now has more than 1.9 million views on YouTube, and they are growing more and more popular every day.

This is how ASB member Morgan discovered them, and after obtaining the band’s number through a friend of a friend, she made a few phone calls and the mission to bring them to Carlmont began.

“After I got their managers contact info, we began emailing back and forth about the different prices. Once we settled on a price, they sent over a contract,” explained Morgan.

Currently, the contract is being reviewed, and Morgan and Zali anxiously await the outcome.

“We basically almost have them booked,” said ASB Leadership teacher Jim Kelly. “The contract just needs to be signed, but we are 95 percent sure that Starting Six will be at Homecoming.”
