The Carlmont Scots JV girls soccer team played the Aragon Dons at home, ultimately winning 1-0 on Feb. 6, a game that came down to strong offensive play and constant communication. In a match where scoring opportunities were limited, Carlmont managed to hold on to a narrow victory.
Carlmont set the tone early, applying pressure on Aragon’s defense. Within the opening stretch, Carlmont created a few scoring opportunities, each testing Aragon’s defensive line. Despite the attacking momentum, none of the shots found the net. Aragon’s defense remained composed under pressure, clearing the ball effectively. The score remained 0-0, but Carlmont’s offensive push signaled control of the game’s pace.
“We really emphasized communication in the past week, like using each other’s names just to make the game more organized. I think that helped overall in terms of keeping possession of the ball and helping us go forward,” said Carlmont head coach Natalia Manzanares.
As the match progressed, communication among Carlmont players became noticeable, with constant calling, directing, and organizing. This helped them maintain structure and limit Aragon’s chances. Their defensive coordination prevented Aragon from building attacks.
“The JV girls played really well and used their words to facilitate great communication as a team,” said team manager Saiya Patel.
The game’s defining moments came in the second half. With 12 minutes remaining on the clock, Carlmont created a key opportunity and finally broke the tie. An offensive play led to the ball finding its way into the goal, giving Carlmont the lead. The breakthrough shifted momentum and placed pressure on Aragon.
Just over a minute later, Carlmont appeared to strike again. Sophomore Lillian Rapp’s shot made it past the goalie after a strong attacking sequence, doubling Carlmont’s lead. However, the celebration was cut short when the play was ruled offside, leaving the score at 1-0. Despite the setback, Carlmont remained composed and focused on reorganization.
“As a team, I think we played very well. We did a lot of communication, but I had an unlucky offside,” Rapp said.
Aragon pushed forward in search of an equalizer, increasing the urgency as the time ticked down. With four minutes left in the game, another shot tested Carlmont’s defense, which ultimately stayed firm.
As the final whistle blew, Carlmont secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory. Their ability to stay connected on the field, respond to pressure, and maintain composure in key moments ultimately made the difference in a closely contested match.
