Junior Makayla Miller highlighted the cheer team’s top-tier energy as the group performed different moves and stunts. She struck a pose that wowed the audience with their skills and started the assembly strongly.

Floods of students entered the western-decorated Scots gym in anticipation of the year’s first big assembly on Oct. 6.

The assembly featured Associated Student Body (ASB) organized Toy Story-themed skits and showcased talented students from the various performing groups.

“Because this was the first big assembly, I feel like it really brought the school together and built up school spirit,” said sophomore Ashlynn Son. “It was also a good way to show off people’s talents like Advanced Dance and the dance team, both of which I’m a part of.”

Son and her classmate, Lola Lagerloef, have been choreographing the Advanced Dance routine and teaching it to the other students for about two months. They are both on the dance team as well, however, which has been stressful as they only had one day to learn that routine.

The dance team wasn’t the only group struggling with time; the cheer team also only had a couple of days to learn and practice their routine.

Simon Hua, in charge of lighting and sound, also faced difficulties along with his team since they only had a little time to prepare.

“We had a semi-full rehearsal of the assembly, but we didn’t have a full, in-depth run-through,” Hua said.

Despite the time constraints, all the participants had one common goal in mind: school spirit. Since this was the freshmen class’s first big event of the school year, ASB knew they had to leave a lasting impact.

“Our main goal was to get freshmen really excited about school and get involved in all the events that ASB is putting on,” said Annie Gu, head of ASB’s Assembly Committee.

This was exemplified during the choir performance where a small ensemble of students sang “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” As the lights came down, students started turning on their phone flashlights. ASB members were shocked as they didn’t need to say anything for it to happen and for the crowd to get involved.

“I think when the lights were off, and everyone had their flashlights out, that was a really special moment,” Hua said.

Ultimately, all of ASB’s efforts paid off, as the assembly was a success.

“The assembly was super cool. It showed off a bunch of Carlmont’s aspects like dancing, cheer, band, choir, and football,” said freshman Kayden Bhatnagar.
