[media-credit id=46 align=”alignnone” width=”217″][/media-credit]On Wednesday, April 11, Dr. Sally Springer visited Carlmont to speak to parents and students about the college admission process.

The event took place at 7:00p.m. in the Student Union and attendance was exceptional, considering the fact that every seat was full and many people had to stand.

Springer is the author of “Admission Matters: What Students and Parents NEED TO KNOW About Getting Into College.”

Her presentation was a summary of the topics covered in her book and the basics for the transition from high school to college.

In her presentation, Springer noted that although the college application process may seem daunting, it is simply about finding the right college fit for the right person.

The countless horror stories in the news about fewer and fewer kids getting into college tends to scare students, but it is important to know that there are about 1,200 four-year colleges and only 250 of them accept less then 50 percent of their applicants.

Springer pointed out that school merit does not matter as much as finding a college that suits a person’s interests. Being able to say that one attends Harvard or Yale is not impressive if going to that school does not provide the opportunities fit for a specific career.

Pasha Minkovsky, a sophomore, disagreed with this statement, “When people ask you where you go to college, you want to be able to tell them that you go to a really good school. Being able to say you go to UCLA impresses people.”
