Toxic stress is not just a temporary part of childhood, but a serious issue that can shape a child’s emotional, physical, and mental development for years. According to Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child, toxic stress occurs when there is excessive or prolonged activation of stress response systems in the brain and body. According to research from Nationwide Children’s Hospital, ongoing stress can interfere with healthy brain development and learning, making it harder for children to feel safe, focused, and emotionally stable. Additionally, according to the National Library of Medicine, toxic stress increases the risk of anxiety, depression, and long-term health problems later in life. Society must recognize toxic stress before more children are forced to grow up carrying its effects. (Jeannette Healy)
