Cartoon: Home Sweet Home

New York Public Libraries announced in October of 2021 that they would abandon late return fees. This announcement made a significant impact, as over 100,000 books have been returned since. California implemented a similar idea; Los Angeles libraries eliminated all fines, which was a welcome change, according to District Supervisor Janice Hahn. “Library late fines do much more harm than good,” Hahn said.
