Cartoon: New year new me

Among American adults, approximately 48% have made a New Year’s resolution, with 21% setting several for 2026, according to The Washington Post. Specifically, younger age groups are more likely to set New Year’s resolutions; roughly 59% of adults aged 18-29 set a goal, compared to 49% of adults aged 50-59. These resolutions tend to focus on self-enrichment, such as fitness; in 2023, Forbes conducted a survey showing an overall increase in individuals improving their mental and physical health. However, simply setting a goal for a grand fitness objective won’t help one actually achieve it. Instead, consider the SMART acronym: is it Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound? If not, how can one alter their resolution to increase the likelihood of completing it? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Advisory Council recommends breaking down a large goal into smaller, more manageable goals to make it easier to accomplish. (Sunny Lin)
