Bringing back iconic songs like “The Best of Both Worlds” and a wave of nostalgia, Miley Cyrus returns to star as Hannah Montana in the highly anticipated “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special” on Disney+.
The reunion premiered on Disney+ on March 24, marking the first on-screen reunion since the 2011 finale. The special featured fan-favorite stars, behind-the-scenes stories, and a nostalgic look back at the show’s lasting impact, which fans were thrilled about.
Prior to its release, the special was revealed on Feb. 17, and passionate fans have been counting down each day in anticipation of its debut.
“I feel like since the show ended, everyone has been hoping for some kind of reboot, so it’s really exciting,” said Sequoia High School junior Anna Tsivikas.
For older-generation fans, the reunion feels especially meaningful, stirring deep nostalgia and a sense of connection. It brings back memories of the moments that first made them fall in love with the show, while also offering a rare chance to relive those fun experiences.
“She was my first introduction to pop music and definitely a reason for why I love pop music to this day. I think a lot of her personality influenced mine at the time, too,” said Los Angeles-based fashion professional Maddie Dame.
The “Hannah Montana” reunion was a nostalgic showing that brought together cast members and fans to celebrate the show’s lasting impact on pop culture. It is best known for starring Cyrus as the double-life teen pop star.
The reunion revisited iconic elements, such as the hidden closet that concealed her double life and the home where she constantly balanced being an everyday high school student with the demands of a pop star.
“I loved the show and would always be tuned in for new episodes. I also remember loving her house,” said Carlmont soccer coach Maya Bulazo.
For a younger fan, there may not be as much nostalgia, but the love is there.
“I loved all the traditional shots, like the house and closet scenes, which were really nostalgic,” Tsivikas said.
Over the past two decades, Cyrus has captivated audiences not only through the hit series but also in “Hannah Montana: The Movie” and now the highly anticipated reunion, with each having their own place in fans’ hearts.
Another staple in the Hannah Montana universe is the music. In front of an audience of 215, Cyrus performed “This is the Life,” “The Climb,” and “The Best of Both Worlds,” some of the show’s most popular songs. Fans also got to hear about special details on some of the songs. For the song “You’ll Always Find Your Way Back Home“, Cyrus revealed that songwriter Taylor Swift wrote that song for the 2009 movie.
The show continues to influence fans today, shaping their sense of style, musical tastes, and identity, while serving as a nostalgic touchstone that still resonates years after its original run.
“I think the styling of the show also really resonates with our generation, especially with the resurgence of Y2K fashion trends. It’s also the nostalgia aspect for sure,” Dame said.
