The Norwegian Nobel Committee has proven once again that wealth and power have their limits. In 2025, Donald Trump made no secret of his desire for a Nobel Peace Prize, and he criticized the committee after it awarded the prize to María Corina Machado for her efforts to promote democracy in Venezuela. Following Trump’s intervention in Venezuela and capture of President Nicolás Maduro, the White House announced plans to run Venezuela. However, despite Machado receiving more than two-thirds of the vote in the previous election, Trump said that “she doesn’t have the support or respect within the country.” Two sources close to the White House told the Washington Post that if Machado had turned the prize down, she would be the president of Venezuela today. Machado recently offered to share her prize with Trump, which Trump was eager to accept. The Nobel Institute clarified that the peace prize cannot be shared or transferred, proving that prestige cannot be negotiated the way power can. (Zane Razzak)
