Cartoon: Colorado river rights

The Supreme Court recently oversaw Arizona v. Navajo Nation, a case that asked whether there was a trusted relationship between the Navajo Nation and the federal government regarding the Nation’s water rights. The Navajo reservation spans several million acres across the West, where water is scarce. Arizona’s argument held that the claim infringed upon the Supreme Court’s previous Colorado River water allocation in Arizona v. California (1963). Unfortunately, the conflict between the American government and native peoples proves to be far from over. Still, something as fundamental as the right to water shouldn’t be a subject of debate.
