The global population will soon reach 8 billion. This event is a significant milestone in human history, representing advances in health, sanitation, and medicine. But at the same time, it calls the threats to our well-being into question — more people than ever will be at the mercy of large-scale conflicts, climate change, and other obstacles. (Andrew Shu)
