Cartoon: Healthcare bound by bans

Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, 22 states have banned abortion. The bans create difficulty for doctors in deciding what qualifies as a medical exception from this law and what will land the physician in jail. Shutting down abortion procedures creates a domino effect in limiting regular screenings and contraceptives. Many women are forced to suffer, whether it be from unwanted pregnancies or emergencies, including infections. Hospitals are placed under heavy scrutiny for violating other federal laws to treat and stabilize patients under fear of violating the abortion bans—a lose-lose situation. The United States, the world, should not be a place where doctors are forced to have their hands tied because basic human rights aren’t noticed. (Skylin Lui)
