Cartoon: Free lunches go to waste

Although complimentary breakfast and lunch at Carlmont may be very convenient, perhaps its accessibility contributes to the amount of food waste that is generated on campus. According to CalRecycle, schools and universities generate about 562,442 tons of waste each year in California, almost half of which is comprised of organic materials like paper, cardboard, and uneaten cafeteria food. Furthermore, food waste attracts birds and other animals to the area, which should not depend on the campus for food, disrupting their normal behavioral patterns. A simple solution: don’t take what you don’t plan to eat.  (Andrew Shu)
