In 2025, Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, discussed how younger people are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence for important life decisions, highlighting a trend of dependence. According to an MIT study, relying on AI for therapy or emotional support can hinder personal growth as users increasingly depend on the bot’s validation instead of learning coping skills. Additionally, over time, with repeated use of artificial intelligence, brain activity associated with creativity and deep thinking decreases. Clinical comparisons from the American Psychiatry Association show that chatbots may not offer nuanced, safe, and ethically appropriate guidance, and may reinforce harmful thoughts. (Jiya Venkatesh)
