Enjoying Starbucks comes at a cost

A tall “Mango Dragonfruit Refresher” and a tall “Caramel Macchiato” are two beverages that can be found on the Starbucks menu.

From seasonal drinks to sweet treats, Starbucks is a place that seems to draw students in whether it’s before or after school.

Not only do students from Carlmont High School appreciate the various options Starbucks has to offer, but students from Notre Dame High School, Ralston Middle School, and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School can be found at the same popular business located in Carlmont Village.

While many find the store enjoyable, the question of whether it’s overrated and overpriced often comes into play.

Some believe that paying $5.95 for a “Crispy Grilled Cheese” can be too pricey, and a tall “Mocha Frappuccino” that is $4.25 may not be completely worth its cost.

“Spending that much money on coffee that isn’t good is definitely not worth it for me,” said Gemma Sangervasi, a sophomore.

This concern is burdening enough to make a customer like Sangervasi purchase a beverage at a neighboring store, such as Jamba Juice or Doc’s Bagels.

Others recognize the expensive items but are willing to pay anyway.

“I’ve been to other coffee shops that have better coffee that is half the price, but Starbucks has a wide variety, so I understand the prices,” said Riley Polkowski, a sophomore.

Additionally, Starbucks’ mobile order is a factor that contributes to the decision of buying an item that could be considered overly expensive.

“I don’t realize the prices of my drinks since I use mobile order and I just charge it without looking,” said Savannah Ponce, a sophomore.

However, there are customers who don’t find the price to be an issue at all.

“I don’t think the cost matters because the dark roast coffee is pretty good and makes up for the price,” said Brian Lee, a sophomore.

For those who enjoy the items available at Starbucks but aren’t willing to pay the price, alternative establishments are considered as better options.

“There isn’t one near here, but I like going to Dutch Bros due to the fact that you get more of a drink for way less,” Sangervasi said.

Although the price is an important component, convenience is too.

“I go to Starbucks because there are so many locations and it’s the most convenient for me, so purchasing a pricey drink seems like a small sacrifice,” Polkowski said.
