Jeffrey’s Hamburgers in Downtown San Mateo, Calif. serves classic “diner-style” food with much variety and many flavors.
Located on South B Street, Jeffrey’s restaurant has an almost retro feel to it, complimented with a fun atmosphere and great food. Their dishes include burgers, French fries, milkshakes, hot dogs, and more.
I ordered the Mushroom Burger ($6.89), the Chili Cheese Fries ($3.29), a Vanilla Milk Shake ($4.49), and, to share with my party of four, Jeffrey’s Signature Salad ($6.99). The rest of my party ordered the Cheeseburger ($5.89), the Garlic Herb Chicken sandwich ($7.49), and the Root Beer Float ($3.99).
The food was quickly delivered all at once, and in no particular order. The short wait was a nice plus, considering the sizable crowd at the time.
The Mushroom Burger plate was very hot and covered in sautéed mushrooms with a layer of melted Swiss cheese on top. The mushrooms were the highlight of the dish, and were infused with different kinds of tastes like garlic and a unique choice of soy sauce.
Although there was nothing else on the burger, there was a topping bar at one end of the restaurant, which included a variety of burger toppers such as lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onions. Condiments were also conveniently found in that area.
Jeffrey’s Signature Salad was a delicious mix of fresh mixed greens, fruits, cheese, and nuts, tossed in zesty lemon vinaigrette. The salad was beautifully arranged, with a ring of sliced honeydew, strawberries, cantaloupe around the edge of the plate and pecans scattered on top. The salad was a sweet and savory combination that felt like a “break” from the other richly seasoned dishes in the meal.
The vanilla shake was a thick and creamy addition to the meal. Ice-cold and delicious, it was very sweet, making it perfect for those with a sweet tooth.
The chili cheese fries performed below expectations, especially compared to the other dishes I ordered. Smothered in a thick mound of chili and cheddar cheese, the French fries were soggy from the start and were too greasy for my taste.
The servers were kind and polite, although they did not pay attention to us after our meal had been served and focused instead on incoming customers.
The restaurant decorations had an enjoyable retro, old-fashioned diner theme, complete with artwork depicting a jukebox and vintage cars on the walls.
Overall, I had a fun and tasty experience at Jeffrey’s Hamburgers. The variety and delicious tastes of the food along with the lively atmosphere made my meal at the restaurant definitely worthwhile.
