Two girls construct a snowman adorned with a festive hat. They used the snow provided by San Mateo Parks and Recreation for the event, which covered a small patch of grass where kids could play. “Snow fits perfectly with the Christmas spirit, and for kids who don’t usually get to see snow, this is such an exciting way to celebrate the holidays,” said a visiting San Francisco resident who brought her daughter.
Glowing lights turned Central Park into a winter wonderland Saturday evening as families came to San Mateo to enjoy festive music and holiday spirit. From 5 to 7 p.m., the park offered a wide range of activities, from a real-snow zone giving kids in the area a rare chance to play in snow, to cookie decorating, arts and crafts, and festive photo opportunities. Families also enjoyed games run by volunteers from the San Mateo Parks and Recreation Youth Advisory Council, such as ring toss and ice fishing, while food trucks and complimentary hot chocolate provided plenty of tasty treats.
