The Carlmont Scots varsity girls softball team lost to the San Mateo Bearcats 16-7 at home on March 12.
The victory brought San Mateo to 10-3, bringing them to No. 2 in the league standings. Carlmont, now at 0-12 in league, is in the No. 8 spot as they head into the last game of their season.
Although the Scots struggled early, they made a comeback midgame. The team showed resilience throughout the rest of the game, trying to improve their defense and maintain strong energy despite the score.
“What kept my team connected was being loud and having high energy. You just have to trust your teammates, no matter what, and it’s not your fault if your teammates don’t make plays,” said freshman player Genevieve Savage.
Carlmont had a difficult start, as the Bearcats quickly built momentum and took the lead in the first inning. The momentum caught the Scots off guard, putting them under pressure, but the team did not lose focus. Instead, they worked to regain their composure and improve their performance as the game continued.
“Winning is about trusting each other. That’s the ultimate thing about any team sport. Trust they’re gonna be there for you, pick you up, and if one person doesn’t do the job, the next one’s gonna do it,” said San Mateo head coach Robert Burley.
Throughout the rest of the game, Carlmont stayed competitive with consistent offense, drawing several walks and keeping runners on base. Even as San Mateo maintained its lead, the Scots continued to support one another and maintain positive energy in the dugout.
“We support each other and treat each other like a second family. The love and support are what make us want to keep working,” said San Mateo player Rachel Warner.
Both teams’ energy never stopped, with cheers for each teammate filling the game. Everyone stayed upbeat, no matter the score.
Even in defeat, the Scots carried themselves with determination.
