The Carlmont Scots JV baseball team came up short in a 5-3 loss to Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory Fightin’ Irish at Carlmont High School on April 7, struggling to recover after an early deficit.
Carlmont entered the game expecting to compete at a high level, but the tone was set early when Sacred Heart put up four runs in the first inning. That strong start forced the Scots to play from behind for the rest of the game.
“We were expecting to win, we wanted to compete, and we wanted to win,” said head coach Michael Simon.
Despite the rough start, Carlmont responded quickly. The team picked up runs in the first and second innings, cutting into the lead and showing signs of a comeback at the plate.
A turning moment came when Jack Lang delivered a home run, accounting for a large portion of the team’s offense and keeping Carlmont within reach.
“Jack Lang hit a home run, so that was key,” Simon said.
Lang stayed focused at the plate, anticipating the pitch that would ultimately lead to his home run.
“I knew he was going to throw a slider, so I was just hanging on it,” Lang said.
Even with the offensive spark, Carlmont couldn’t fully close the gap. The team added another run later in the game, but Sacred Heart’s pitching held firm down the stretch.
On the mound, Carlmont used multiple pitchers in what Simon described as a bullpen effort. While there were solid moments, the early runs proved costly.
“The first game of the week, everyone has pitching. And this was a bullpen game for us, and our four pitchers did great,” Simon said.
Still, not all players felt satisfied with their individual performances.
“My body wasn’t feeling too great because I was throwing yesterday as well,” said Zachery Brier.
Carlmont finished with eight hits, matching Sacred Heart’s total, but struggled to convert opportunities into runs. Throughout the matchup, team chemistry remained a noticeable strength, even if the energy fluctuated at times.
“Team chemistry is always pretty good, but at times there’s no energy,” Brier said.
Simon echoed that sentiment, noting that the team showed good chemistry but still needs to stay focused.
“They were a little playful. They need to be reminded they’re serious baseball players,” Simon said.
Looking ahead, Carlmont is focused on improving consistency and fundamentals as they prepare for tougher competition.
“We need to work on several aspects of the game and just continue to be solid on fundamentals,” Simon said.
With practice ahead and a challenging matchup coming up, the Scots will look to turn lessons from this loss into stronger performances moving forward.
