The Carlmont Scots JV girls basketball team fell short against the Mills Vikings on Jan. 21, with a final score of 34-12.
The Scots went into the game confident after winning last week against Half Moon Bay. This was their last game before the Scots cycle back and start playing each high school team for a second time this season.
No matter the outcome, the Scots focus on multiple practices a week, mostly with shooting drills to increase points.
Sophomore Alexa Weiss started playing basketball when she was six, on and off throughout middle school. She shares how she practices best before each game.
“We practice four to six days a week. In practice, we do a lot of layups and drills, like shooting drills and defense drills,” Weiss said.
JV Coach Alana Santiago leads JV practices and believes consistency is crucial throughout the game.
“We’re making sure we’re consistent and working really hard towards our goals and just being persistent,” Santiago said.
The Scots and Vikings were gridlocked until halftime, with the score similar at the end of the second quarter. At the start of the third quarter, the Vikings built a lead that they maintained for the rest of the game.
The team focuses on a 4-quarter mindset to prevent this in further games. A 4-quarter mindset is based on staying consistent throughout all four quarters of the game.
“At the start of the season, we were giving up towards the half or being a really sluggish team, but we’ve really picked it up the past two games and are really finding where our groove is throughout the new course of the league season,” Santiago said.
Spectator and varsity basketball player Sophia Kan also shared her perspective on the JV team so far.
“They were really fantastic, and they usually win a lot. I think they play together really well,” Kan said.
Many of the points throughout the game were scored with free throws, and the majority of them were executed by freshman players Parto Azar and Elvia Lo.
Coaches and players alike look forward to the upcoming games as they work towards the Central Coast Section (CCS) Championships.
“We look forward to the really good, great rest of the season and the competition that we have out there, highlighting a lot of our greatest qualities and really impacting our team as a whole. Really proud of them,” Santiago said.
Despite the final score, Kan comments on the overall game and basketball as a sport.
“In basketball, I like how we all take care of each other. As a team, we all play for one another and are always happy for each other,” Kan said.
