On Tuesday May 3, 2016, Boys varsity lacrosse defeated the Sequoia Cherokees 6-5.
As rivals, the two teams also battled for the Carl-Seq Cup, located at Carlmont prior to this match.
“We have a Carlmont-Sequoia Cup for every single sport. For lacrosse, Sequoia has never won the cup. Today we forgot to bring the cup, but it will continue to stay in our locker room,” said junior Matt Irwin.
The first quarter ended with the score of 2-1 Scots. The first goal was made by junior Jordan Luke, followed by junior Jack Morris.
Sequoia senior Daniel Spottiswood said, “I knew it was going to be an intense game, a tough battle. I thought in general we kept it pretty clean though and a hard fight. I think we did not execute to the best of our ability. We should have came out stronger in the first half.”
During the second quarter, both teams were more aggressive. Scots win 4-2.
“We were more aggressive than the first, but smarter than the last two. We played with intent. We were psyched, but we didn’t let our emotions get the best of us,” said Irwin.
Carlmont proceeded to win the third quarter 5-4.
In the final quarter, Sequoia put up a hard fight. In the last five minutes of the game, the score was 5-5 until senior Marshall Cofield scored a goal.
The main goal keeper for Carlmont, junior Max Holmes, had over 11 saves and despite an infraction he received in the first few minutes of the game for illegal body check.
Holmes said, “I thought it was a good game. We played well and we executed. I kind of knew we were going to win because it is Sequoia and I am a goalie so I can prevent them from scoring. I was not going to let Sequoia win.”
For the Cherokees, it was their senior night. They also recognized Carlmont seniors before the game commenced.
Carlmont will work on certain skills such as ball control and passing.
Carlmont Alumni and assistant coach Kalvin Tousant said, “Defensively, we had a great game. Eric Swanson, Matt Irwin, and Max Tulchinsky also performed very well. Offensively, we moved the ball around and had good shots. We need to work on ground balls, moving without the ball, and passing.”
Carlmont will play their last league game and hold senior night on Thursday May 6 at home.
