On the first test day at the Road America track in Wisconsin, Abbate suffered a mechanical brake failure and crashed into the wall at 80 miles per hour. As a result, Abbate broke her right ankle, fractured her upper back, and had a herniated disk in her lower back. Despite this, less than seven weeks after her accident, Abbate got back in the car, but the incident has affected her mindset. "I did have an issue at my last race. I was at a new track and you had to come into the infield blind, so you couldn't see the corner and it was all concrete walls. It just mentally messed with me because I couldn't bring myself to get in there as fast as everybody else because it scared me," Abbate said.
