Cartoon: Overdoses come in many shades

Certain brightly-colored pills, powders, and chalklike blocks are currently one of the most significant national health threats. These deceiving substances contain fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid and a leading cause of drug overdoses. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) recognizes “rainbow” fentanyl as a method for drug traffickers to put drugs in the hands of young people, as it comes in forms that resemble candy. A newly released psychological study explores neurobiological differences between black and white children ages 9 to 10. Surveys and brain scans of 1,786 Black and 7,350 white participants reflect these differences. White children compared to black children have more grey matter in the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus. These small developmental differences have been connected to marital hardship, neighborhood disadvantages, and trauma history that led to greater disadvantages for Black children. This piece is meant to connect black trauma surrounding police bias with brain development.
