Several western states, including California, are currently experiencing a drought of historic proportions. This ongoing drought has had devastating effects on the environment: California has suffered intense forest fires, temperatures have shot above 110 degrees Fahrenheit, and water levels have lowered tremendously. Lake Powell, stretching from Arizona to Utah, has sunk to unimaginable lows, while Nevada’s Lake Mead has dropped so low that an intake valve created in 1971 is now exposed. Not only will this drop in water level ruin summer vacation plans, but it will threaten the ability of families to access clean drinkable water. (Calvin Jacobson)
