The final games of the boys water polo seasons were against one of Carlmont’s rivals, Sequoia High School.
The varsity boys had just won their final game against Sequoia with a score 11-9 when the JV team dove into the pool for their game.
Coaches Andreas and Zach were determined to make the last game enjoyable for all the players.
Half way through the second quarter of the game, when Carlmont was up 4-1, Andreas put in freshman players Pierre Llorach and Cody Campbell.
As this was their first year playing for the Scots, the boys did not get as much playing time as the sophomore starters this season.
When Llorach made a near perfect assist to sophomore Michael Scallen for the team’s 5th goal, Andreas jumped to his feet, threw up his arms and screamed, “Yeah Pierre!”
After the game Andreas said, “It’s nice to see a kid who isn’t a starter make such an amazing play.”
As the game progressed the battle became more and more strenuous on the players and coaches.
The referee even stopped the game to warn coach Andreas about his shouting (Andreas had been disagreeing with his calls all game).
So, between quarters and during time outs Andreas told his team to keep their emotions under control and remember that they must focus on the things they can control, like their playing, and not on what they can’t, like the ref’s whistle.
When the final buzzer echoed over the water, the score stood at 9-4, a victory to end the Scots season.
Both players and coaches are looking forward to next season, “I can’t wait for water polo to start again” said Campbell.
Andreas had similar feelings about the water polo season, “I really want to thank the team for their effort this season, it’s been a real roller coaster.”
Both boys water polo teams ended their seasons on a good note, with victory.
