An early two-goal lead was not enough for the Lady Scots as they fell 9-5 to Menlo-Atherton Oct. 16, snapping their two-game winning streak.
The Scots started off strong, getting two goals early on the Menlo-Atherton goalie to take a 2-0 lead into the second quarter.
However, that’s about as good as it got for the Lady Scots; as M.A’s offense replied with six unanswered goals to lead 6-2 at the half.
“We had a great first quarter because we played with a team-first mindset. As M.A started scoring, we started playing individually and that led to the loss,” said Coach Bernice O’Connor.
The home side fought hard to bring back the deficit, hitting the post multiple times and forcing good saves from the Menlo-Atherton goalie. But every time the Scots scored, Menlo-Atherton would reply with one of their own.
Spectator, sophomore Jacob Segal felt the Scots were unlucky not to get closer; “They were close on a couple chances. If those had gone in, the whole game would have been different.”
When asked if she thought the final score reflected the game well, senior Kristen Dames said, “I think it did. The referees did their jobs and we had our mess-ups that let them take over the game. I think if we work on our communication and awareness we’ll be fine.”
The game wasn’t a complete loss however, as O’Connor had this to say after the game: “Today we learned that when we play as a team, we can do great things.”
With the loss, the Lady Scots fall down to a 3-4 record. They will look to get back to .500 next week when they head to Burlingame High to take on the Lady Panthers.
