As the year comes to a close and the holiday season begins, the San Carlos community is coming together in support of the San Carlos Toy Drive, an event that brings people together in a meaningful way. The San Carlos Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is hosting this event in partnership with One Life Counseling Center.
The purpose of the drive is to ensure that local children and teens experience the joy and generosity of the holiday season, regardless of their circumstances. The toy drive focuses on collecting new, unopened toys and gift cards, all of which will be distributed directly to families in the community. Members of the YAC hope that each donation will help brighten the holiday season for a young person who might otherwise go without a present this year.
“I do my work because I think that we have an incredibly talented future generation, and I am honestly honored to advise them,” said Emma Licko, the recreation supervisor at the YAC. Licko was the one who advised the YAC during this event.
The council encourages donors to bring items that would appeal to children of all ages. According to the organizers of this drive, toddlers might enjoy learning toys, sensory play items, and plush animals. Younger children often like board games, sports equipment, and art supplies. Teens appreciate gift cards, accessories, self-care items, and small electronics. Lastly, there is a system for making online donations using the Amazon wish list provided by the council, rather than making in-person purchases.
“Toys have a really important part in shaping childhood, and they’re a key part of most people’s childhood memories. So by allowing underprivileged people to have greater access to toys, it actually allows them to create happier memories of their childhood and allows them to create life-lasting memories that will carry through into adulthood,” said Jasper Patel, a junior at Carlmont High School.
Donations can be dropped off at the San Carlos Youth Center, located at 1001 Chestnut St. The center is open for community donations Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The event began on Nov. 10, and the last day to donate items is Dec. 15.
Many families experience financial stress during the holidays, and the ability to give a child a gift can be out of reach. Local families may struggle to cover basic needs, let alone afford a gift for their kids. A donation can be the difference between a child receiving or not receiving a gift this season, which is why this event has such an impact on the community.
Another way to help is by spreading the word about the toy drive. Reaching out to friends, neighbors, coworkers, and local groups can expand the reach of the effort by sharing information, inviting others to participate, or discussing the program within the community.
The San Carlos YAC also hosts other events, such as their program “Everyday Wins: Life Skills for Teens.” This program is designed to help high school students plan for their future.
“Everyday Wins: Life Skills for Teens, is a new, free professional lecture meant to provide teens with knowledge outside of what they learn in the classroom,” said Zoey Van Vorst, another member of the YAC.
As the season of giving continues, the San Carlos community is encouraged to join in this tradition of generosity. Whether donating a toy, a gift card, or sharing news of the event, each act of kindness helps ensure that local children and teens feel valued and supported.
“The toy drive bin was overflowing. It’s fantastic to see our community come together and embrace the giving spirit during the holidays,” Van Vorst said.
