The Carlmont Scots JV baseball team defeated the Sequoia Ravens on April 1, with a final score of 3-1.
The game lasted over two hours, with no runs scored through the first five half-innings. The Scots broke the tie in the sixth half-inning, and held it through the final inning.
Freshman CJ Webster addressed the importance of this rivalry between the Scots and the Ravens.
“Sequoia is our rival high school, so we always want to try to beat them and get a good win,” Webster said.
His teammate, sophomore Karam Kayali, agreed when discussing the significance of this game.
“This game was important because it was against our rivals and it was a league game,” Kayali said.
In the first inning, Kayali pitched for the Ravens, with no runs scored. The Scots also did not score any runs. Defensive play on both sides prevented the offensive runs from scoring, as neither team had scored.
During the third inning, the Ravens advanced two bases, but sophomore Jeremy Yam caught the ball before they ran to third base.
As a result, both teams were locked in a 0-0 tie for the majority of the game. Not until the sixth half-inning did the Scots begin to take a lead.
The Scots made a pitching change near the end of the game, with freshman William Tadlock taking the mound.
The Ravens scored one run, and the Scots scored three runs from freshman CJ Webster, freshman Lucca Williams, and freshman Robert Tadlock.
“I think I played pretty well defensively. My favorite part of playing in this game was hitting and getting on bases,” Webster said.
Sequoia JV baseball coach Mike Lazzaroni noted areas for improvement moving forward.
“Although we played well, we needed more clutch hitting,” Lazzaroni said.
No matter the score, both teams were proud of their performance. Lazzaroni was proud of how his team played.
“I thought we played fairly well. I think we did everything we would have done,” Lazzaroni said.
The Ravens made it difficult to run the ball, but the Scots ultimately secured the victory. The win improves Carlmont’s standing in the league, and both teams look forward to a rematch.
