Scots go Bear hunting

Senior Alexis Morrow with sophomore Sophie Srivastava block a hit by Menlo Atherton.

As the final point is given, one side screams with tears of joy pouring down their faces and running to each other. On the other side, the teammates immediately take their belongings and leave the gym with their heads to the ground and their hearts broken.

In the first time since October 2008, Carlmont Varsity Volleyball defeated Menlo Atherton Bears in three decisive sets on Nov. 3 at the Terry Stogner Gym.

All the players on the court competed for the ball, but Carlmont prevailed because of their intense focus and desire to win for each other. The girls walked into the gym wanting to create a change, and that is exactly what they did.

Senior Elena Mateus said, “This was a game where the defense’s confidence and focus was needed for the win. Everyone’s determination to prevent the ball from hitting the ground helped give us a win. We told ourselves in the back line that this is our house and nothing will get past us.”

The last time Carlmont played Menlo Atherton was away on Oct. 8. Carlmont suffered a devastating loss that broke their winning streak of 11-0. At this game, the Scots lacked confidence and perseverance to win the game. However, almost one month later, Carlmont had worked hard to learn from their mistakes and to bond with one another. Menlo Atherton clearly had not expected this.

Menlo Atherton junior Kirby Knapp said, “They had a lot more energy than we did. It took us by surprise, we were definitely not as ready as we should have been. Carlmont was persistent and determined throughout the whole match.”

Last week, Carlmont experienced two losses against Burlingame and Aragon. However, this did not bring their spirits down.

Senior Erin Alonso said, “Last week was tough for us with our losses, but we continued to work hard at practice. Today, we were all there for each other, there was no negative energy at all. We played as one and earned our confidence back.”

Due to the losses last week, Carlmont was tied for second place with Burligame and Argaon, but now they are solely second place in the league.

For the seniors especially, this game was very important for many reasons. This was the second to last game of their final season playing for Carlmont, and it was against their biggest rival Menlo Atherton. A lot of the seniors stepped up and guided the team to success.

Carlmont varsity coach Chris Crader said, “We have a lot of character this year, and great leadership from our seniors. Tonight they really wanted to fight for each other, which made a difference.”

The Scots continue to be undefeated at home and look forward to their final league game on Thursday Nov. 5, which is also Senior Night.
