Carlmont’s varsity girls flag football continued their undefeated season in league by defeating the Sequoia Ravens 26-13 on Monday, Oct. 7.
Carlmont led off the game with a toss play, as sophomore Samantha Tow took the ball down the right sideline for a touchdown. After getting a stop on defense, junior quarterback Lauren Greene started the next drive with a long pass to sophomore Emily Monteforte.
“I feel like there’s a lot of pressure on me for a lot of the plays, but I need to persevere,” Greene said. “In practice, we’ve been working on our deep throws a lot and trying to do that more in games.”
Tow ran the next snap down the right sideline for her second touchdown of the game. Sequoia continued to persevere, as they responded with a touchdown of their own on fourth and goal, as sophomore Kieran Hennely caught a touchdown.
Sequoia tied the game at 13-13 at halftime. With nine minutes left in the game, Tow scored her third touchdown on a pass to the left sideline. Carlmont ended the game with a touchdown pass from Greene to junior wide receiver Isabella Wilson.
Despite their win, the Scots noted that there were some challenges in the game that they needed to work on in practice.
“We just need to work on consistency and effort for all, for the whole game, versus parts of the game,” said head coach Oscar Fabic. “I’m proud of the team for stepping up when they needed to. But certainly, I think everybody would agree that we could do better.”
The rise of flag football at Carlmont has been prominent as the team has gone undefeated in the league since the creation of their team in 2023. This holds the players to a high standard and pushes them to work hard.
“It’s definitely an adjustment playing with new people who have been playing since last year and who have a championship record of 10-0. So joining a team that is undefeated is definitely a challenge, you have to earn your spot,” said senior defensive back Gabriela Cole.
The Scots have high hopes for the rest of the season. Fabic and the players have expressed their excitement and how much fun they’ve had so far.
“We hope to win the Peninsula Athletic League championship and the Central Coast Section championship, like a continuation of last year,” Fabic said.
