The Belmont Lions Club is holding their 74th annual Student Speaker Contest on Thursday, Feb. 17 at the Belmont City Hall from 6 PM to 9 PM. The topic being debated this year is “Enforcing Our Borders – State vs. Federal Rights.”
The contest is open to all students, free of charge, who must speak on the topic anywhere from five to ten minutes with the aid of a note card no larger than 3” by 5”. The speeches given will be judged on text, delivery, and effectiveness; however, no prior experience is needed.
“The environment is very relaxed and supportive,” replied Sylvia Chu, a member of the Belmont Lion Club, “The judges are usually members of the local community who are eager to encourage the advancement of skills in our high school students.”
There will be one winner, who wins $75, and all other contestants receive $25 for participating. The winner will also be able to move on to compete in a zone region contest and have the chance to win another $75. Besides cash prizes, students will be strengthening their public speaking skills.
“The contest offers a wonderful opportunity for students to practice their public-speaking skills,” said Chu, “Public-speaking skills are a very valuable form of communication [and] are essential for developing professional careers in the future.”
The Belmont Lions Club is dedicated to helping the community through projects such as cleaning local parks, feeding the homeless, and supporting music programs in local schools.
