After hearing voices from as far back as middle school, it seems Youshock’s mental disorders got the best of him. Youshock arrived at Hillsdale High School on Aug. 20, 2009 bearing bombs, a sword, and a chain saw he previous named “Collie” after the 1993 school massacre at Columbine High School.
Youshock was put on trial for the first time on Mar. 16, 2010. He is currently pleading not guilty by reason of insanity to several felonies, including two counts of attempted murder.
Although Youshock may have taken Hillsdale and his family by surprise, the causes of his outbreak nearly two years ago were long built up. According to the San Mateo Daily Journal, Youshock believes that, “the world is infused with hostility and aggressive themes.”
Youshock spent most of his time before his attack at Hillsdale alone in his room drifting into elaborate fantasies about attacking former teachers and about cutting his own tongue to avoid conversation.
On the morning of his attack Youshock went into Hillsdale with the intent of killing his chemistry teacher and two other teachers he considered “guilty.” But he planned on leaving principal, Jeff Gilbert alive to be left with guilt on his shoulders.
After much cross-examination by many doctors, Youshock is considered a very mentally ill teenager. On the contrary, according to the juvenile hall reports there was nothing to indicate Youshock’s mental state was concerning or abnormal.
Youshock’s case continues to this day, and he reamins in custody without bail.
